Boots opts for paper over plastic

Boots is replacing its plastic bags with paper bags. The move follows negative coverage of its central pharmacy prescriptions moving to plastic packaging – and this will stay the case.

The paper bags will be trialled in 53 stores before being rolled out to all stores, with a target date of 2020 for a complete change. All proceeds will go to BBC Children in Need.

Whether the change to paper is more environmentally beneficial in whole lifecycle terms is still debated, with paper still requiring manufacture and plastic being more durable and therefore capable of more reuse. Boots, however, has accounted for this and believes that the change will make a positive impact.
