MEPs vote through renewable targets

MEPs have voted to increase efficiency and renewable energy targets.

The new targets will require a 40 per cent efficiency goal and individual national targets for 2030, describing what each country needs to do to reach the overall goal. Such targets would cover all stages of the energy chain, including generation, transmission, distribution and end use.

The vote has caused considerable unrest in the European Parliament, with environmental groups welcoming the result, but also allegations of “fake news” being made.

In another vote, the MEPs also set a minimum of 35 per cent for all energy that is consumed in the EU to come from renewable sources.

MEPs have also amended proposals to guarantee that ant consumers generate their own electricity or store it will not be taxed on it.
