Unilever calls for responsible business

Unilever CEO Alan Jope has written an open letter to its trade associations and business groups, stating the need to accept the issues of climate change and requesting urgent action to shift economies onto a ‘zero carbon pathway’.

Jope stated: “Like many businesses, we are seeking to accelerate climate action within our own operations and within our wider value chain. However, it is increasingly clear that tackling climate change at the speed and scale necessary requires wider transformational changes to the systems in which we operate. This requires strong government policy that creates the right context for further change and accelerated business action.”

Seeking to achieve a net zero emissions world by 2050, Jope asked Unilever’s partners to confirm whether each organisation’s lobbying position on climate policy was consistent with Unilever’s position and the 1.5 degree ambition set out in the Paris Agreement.
