European Commission’s decision on palm oil bio-fuel

The European Commission has finally delivered a verdict on biofuel produced from palm oil, concluding that the cultivation of palm oil, mostly undertaken in Indonesia and Malaysia, results in excessive deforestation and should not be eligible to count toward EU renewable transport targets.

It is, of course, a verdict that the major producers of palm oil will dispute, with the decision meaning that the fuel's use in the EU will be adversely affected. Although once a favoured source of energy, much like diesel, it has recently fallen from favour in the face of evidence of the resultant deforestation it causes and reduction in agricultural land that could be used for food production.
