Coca-Cola, Dr Pepper and PepsiCo unite under ABA

The Coca-Cola Company, Keurig Dr Pepper and PepsiCo have announced the launch of the Every Bottle Back initiative, an effort spearheaded by the American Beverage Association (ABA) to reduce the industry’s use of virgin plastic by making significant investments to improve the collection of plastic bottles so that they can recycled.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) will provide strategic scientific advice to help measure the industry’s progress in reducing its plastic footprint and The Recycling Partnership and Closed Loop Partners will assist in deploying funds for the initiative.

The majority of plastic bottles in the US are made from PET, and through the Every Bottle Back initiative, beverage companies are stepping up efforts to reclaim as much plastic packaging as possible to ensure it is remade into new PET bottles. Manufactures have been keen to reduce the amount of virgin plastics used and initiatives, such as those by Coca-Cola have made some progress, but there remains much work to do, as a recent report by Break Free From Plastics has placed these manufactures as amongst the worst plastic polluters. At the same time progress has been made on being able to recover more plastic from waste – and governmental policies that have, or might, place a ‘deposit’ on bottles.
