Government pushes ahead with Environment Bill

The Queen’s speech confirmed the Government’s intention to press ahead with its environmental measures – subject, of course, to a General Election.

The measures were originally proposed in the Environment Bill, announced by the then Prime Minister Theresa May in July 2018. Should the Government be in a position to enact the changes, then the impact on the waste and recycling sector will be significant, with measures to improve air and water quality, tackle plastic pollution and restore habitats so plants and wildlife, alongside new legally binding environmental improvement targets.

In place of EU standards, a new independent regulator would be established to scrutinise environmental policy and investigate complaints and take enforcement action. This proposed new body is provisionally to be called the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP).
