Not so green light to North Sea field

The Government has approved the Abigail field, a new oil and gas development in the North Sea.

Just over 200km from Peterhead, the site is owned by Israeli-owned Ithaca Energy. The decision will be welcomed by the sector that recently saw Shell disengage from the Cambo oil field plans last year but has sparked anger from a raft of environmental groups.

Approval by the Oil and Gas Authority come at a time when energy prices are experiencing a spike, and the debate on how to organise the transition to green energy whilst also protecting consumers will inevitably by be messy and partisan, especially given the needs for domestic security of energy and a desire to distance the UK from being dependent on foreign imports.
