Aldi to use vegetable oil to power 160 of its lorries

Aldi is to convert just under a third of its fleet of HGV lorries to operate on hydrotreated vegetable oil fuels, which is an alternative to diesel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

The move will involve 160 lorries based at its distribution centres in Cardiff, Swindon and Neston.

This will reduce the supermarket’s carbon footprint by around 15,432 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.

Aldi says that if implemented across its entire fleet of 550 lorries the move could eliminate an additional 55,130 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.

“Switching to HVO fuels on our lorry fleet aligns with our long-term sustainability goals and reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon emissions, said Aldi national sustainability director Liz Fox.

“We are always looking for ways to continue our efforts to drive positive change across the business and this move in particular is a significant milestone for Aldi.”
