BP has agreed the first in a series of innovative power deals with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to supply renewable energy to the European data centres that drive the AWS cloud platform.
Whilst embattled in its attempts to portray itself as a renewable company, BP will begin supplying AWS with renewable energy from more than 170 megawatts (MW) of newbuild wind and solar projects in Sweden and Spain from 2021.
"BP and AWS are both targeting reductions in emissions from their respective operations. One way BP can play an important role in helping our customers is by using our trading capability and scale to deliver innovative, reliable and flexible supplies of low-carbon and renewable power to major corporate customers and partners ." said Robert Lawson, chief operating officer for Global Gas at BP Supply and Trading.
BP has also announced that Lightsource BP is to accelerate its global solar growth with further investment.
Lightsource BP and BP have agreed to equalise their shareholdings to create a simplified 50:50 joint venture structure. As part of the transaction, BP will purchase newly-issued equity in the business to help accelerate Lightsource BP’s growth, supporting its ambitious drive towards 10GW of developed assets by the end of 2023.
