Wael Aboulmagd, Egypt's COP27 special representative has warned nations ahead of the summit that the war in the Ukraine will not be an excuse to return to more emissions.
As Egypt readies itself to host COP27, Aboulmagd has encourages all nations to work together to achieve a greener world.
Against a backdrop of war, floods wildfires, droughts and food crises, energy concerns have tempted many countries to revert to fossil fuels in the short-term as they buikd greener alternatives, but Aboulmagd has said that it is "high time" to implement the Paris Agreement, signed at COP21.
In a separate issue, the location of COP27 means that it likely the controversial topic of aid or reparations to the poorer regions from the richer, more polluting countries will be to the fore. Currently ‘rich’ countries are short of $16bn of the agreed target to channel $100bn a year by 2020 to their poorer areas to help them cope with climate change. Aboulmagd has said that Egypt will be “putting a lot of effort” into the issue.
As before, part of the issue us the thin line between help sand compensation. At COP26 both the EU and US rejected the idea of compensation.
