Cadent hands Royal British Legion just under £1m to support veterans

Gas distribution network Cadent has handed the Royal British Legion a £950,000 grant to support the charity’s benefits and money advice service for those in the armed forces community impacted by the cost-of-living crisis.

The service helps veterans and their families access benefits they are entitled to as well as deal with debt and build their financial resilience.

Through the partnership Cadent will also raise awareness of the risks of carbon monoxide in the home and to keep their bills lower.

The grant comes amid concerns around large profits being made by energy firms and rising costs faced by households

End Fuel Poverty Coalition found that 20 energy companies have made “a staggering” £457bn in profits since the start of the energy bills crisis. The coalition found that £61bn in profits has been posted this year alone.

From October to December the energy price cap set by Ofgem has increased by 10% to £1,717 per year for a typical household.

“We are dedicated to supporting military reservists and service leavers, as well as having a thriving employee-led military community,” said Cadent head of customer vulnerability social programmes Phil Burrows.

“It makes perfect sense that we expand our support to such a wonderful organisation like The Royal British Legion.”

The charity’s head of corporate partnerships Ben France said the partnership will enable the charity “to enhance the way we support members of the armed forces community and help them keep safe and warm”.

“The funding will allow us to focus on new areas such as carbon monoxide safety, whilst supporting our existing efforts to tackle fuel poverty and provide tailored support,” he added.
