Denmark has become the first country to offer ‘compensation’ for its part on climate change, promising €13.4 million to developing nations.

Although the amount is relatively small, the significance is great, as it sets a precedent, as Danish Development Minister Flemming Moller Mortensen set out the offer at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Mortensen said it is "grossly unfair that the world’s poorest should suffer the most from the consequences of climate change," to which they have contributed "the least."

Rather than being direct ‘compensation’, the funds from Demark will be used in various areas that address current climate related problem. The thin line that divides ‘aid’ and ‘compensation’ have made the issue difficult, in part because of the reluctance to admit a direct liability.

The funds will go to Africa's Sahel region and other vulnerable areas affected by the climate crisis.
