Coal has not contributed to the UK’s energy mix for the last 18 consecutive days, representing the longest non-coal period since 1882.
At 438 hours, according to National Grid, the latest set of data is shown from Drax Electric Insights.
The previous record was recorded in June last year, and the data shows that a move to cleaner energy is occurring, but it should be noted that whilst nuclear, biomass, solar, wind and hydro performed well, with solar setting in own new record of more than 9.6GW, gas was still a major contributor.
The Government will ban all coal generation from 2025, and the steep decline in coal use has helped reduce the UK’s carbon emissions significantly.
