A cross-party coalition is attempting to block the EU’s inclusion of nuclear and gas from its taxonomy.
The controversial green investment taxonomy has been beset with issues since its launch, primarily because of member states’ divergent energy needs, and now the war in the Ukraine has deepened those divisions.
The EU has attempted to classify oil and fossil fuel derived gas as “transitional” energy sources, but the new coalition has objected ahead of a vote in July. Despite significant resistance to the idea of incorporating gas and nuclear with resultant carbon and nuclear waste it is uncertain whether there will be enough pressure to avert their inclusion. In particular, it has been alleged that the moves are there to aid Germany and France for narrow nationalistic reasons.
