Finland’s prime minister: innovation alone cannot solve the climate crisis

Writing for the World Economic Forum, the Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, has warns that innovation alone will not save the world from climate disaster.

Finland has some of the most ambitious climate targets in the world, with a target to be climate neutral by 2035. Acknowledging that innovation and technology will have a major role to play in this, Marin also is clear that it cannot be relied on the solve the climate crisis.

“New technologies will enable a major shift toward sustainably fuelled transportation in many developed and developing countries,” She states, but then adds: “But technology will not solve the climate crisis for us. We also need to create the right policy environment. A key component of the green transition will be higher carbon pricing, which requires coordination and support at an international level. Agreeing on sustainable criteria for carbon-market mechanisms would be an important step forward. And governments should do more to support structural changes through regulatory frameworks and financial incentives.”

In short, Marin sees the reduction of carbon output as a fast-approaching necessity, and that global carbon emissions must peak soon to avert future climate disasters. In this she sees a significant role for regulation, and even changes to the socio-economic drivers of the West.
