The G7 nations have been seeking new targets for solar and offshore wind in order to speed up renewable energy development and phase-out fossil fuels.
The session of G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Sapporo, Japan called for "drastically" increasing renewable energy. It is a major acceleration of the G7 targets, but falls short of a 2030 deadline that some G7 members had been pushing for.
There was an agreement to accelerate “the phase-out of unabated fossil fuels”, the burning of fossil fuels with carbon capture, and “predominantly” decarbonised the power sector by 2035.
The event also put an emphasis on aid that could be given to emerging countries to help them reduce emissions.
Japan's Economy and Trade Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura was particularly pointed in the need to help the "Global South" in carbon reduction.
