HSBC UK launches financial literacy campaign with Girlguiding

HSBC UK has launched a financial literacy campaign with youth charity Girlguiding to teach money skills to girls.

The link up sees the bank develop an ‘I’m money confident’ badge available for 300,000 girls aged between four and 18 involved with the charity.

It will also work with the charity to teach its 80,000 volunteers money skills to support their running of Girlguiding units as well as other areas of their lives at home and at work.

The campaign has been launched after research commissioned by the bank found that a one in three of girls aged five to 17 do not think they are good at managing money, marginally more than boys.

Three in five girls say they have seen their parents worry about money and more than half of girls would like to develop money managing skills.

“Financial skills are life skills and creating new and interesting ways for young people to build financial confidence both inside and outside of the classroom is key,” said HSBC UK chief executive Ian Stuart.

“By working with partners such as Girlguiding, we can help more girls and young people grow up feeling prepared and empowered to take control of their financial futures.”

Girlguiding chief executive Angela Salt added: “Research tells us girls want to develop skills in money management but are not getting enough opportunities.

“We want to change this so that we can empower girls to feel more confident about financial management, a skill that they can use long into the future.

“With HSBC UK’s support, we’re able to help girls from our youngest members in Rainbows aged four, right up to Rangers aged 18, to learn the skill of financial literacy in a fun, engaging and practical way through our resources and new badge.”
