RE100 has now reached 300 members with the latest cohort of businesses including Novartis, Heineken, LG Energy Solution and Epson.
From founding members, Swiss Re and Ikea, the membership growth in RE100 has spread globally, across South America, the Middle East, southern Africa and, rapidly, in the Asia-Pacific region as the energy initiative for businesses where the ‘100’ means a commitment to buying 100 per cent renewable electricity.
The emergence of RE100 is a measure of the transition that has happened in the energy landscape over the last decade with a rapid shift in the cost of renewable energy. A survey of RE100 members in September last year found that almost 70 per cent of respondents cited cost savings as a driver for switching to renewable electricity. This is allied to a survey where 99 per cent of RE100 members highlighted CSR and driving down greenhouse gas emissions as the main reasons as to why they are committed to switching to renewable electricity as internal and customer awareness of climate issues has grown.
