RR aims for modular reactors by 2029

Rolls-Royce has been developing the technology to enable small modular reactors (SMRs) to be economically viable – and help reduce carbon globally.

The environmental merits of nuclear have long been debated, but as zero carbon emitters they present an option for reducing climate damage. The sticking point has been that nuclear power is generally expensive, and wit the cost of renewables falling, the case has been a difficult one to make.

Rolls-Royce’s UK SMR concept allows off-site modular construction using standard components, reducing risks and cost - and could mean that the UK adopts a dozen or so reactors by the end of the decade. It is, however, in exporting the technology that the company hopes to achieve the economies of scale required,
