When Charles Rolls drove a 1900 electric car named the Columbia, he made a prophecy: “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration. They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged.”

Rolls-Royce might have been on a 120-year long diversion, but the dream is about to be realised as the car marque enters the final testing phase of its new Spectre.

In 2011, Rolls-Royce showcased a fully electric Experimental Phantom concept named 102EX, and CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös made a clear promise that Rolls-Royce would go electric this decade; by 2030 Rolls-Royce will be a fully electric motor car brand.

The entire car has been designed with electronic control at its heart, but it has also significant developments in suspension and aerodynamics – even the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot has been redesigned.

The Spectre will have a drag coefficient (cd) of 0.25. This does not just represent a record in the context of Rolls-Royce but is unprecedented in the luxury sector.
