Retailer and tech firm redistribute one million items of surplus food over last year

A link up between retailer Central Co-op and food sharing app Olio has “rescued” one million items of surplus food to be redistributed to those impacted by food poverty.

The milestone has been reached over the last year, since the retailer linked up with app in September 2023.

Through their collaboration volunteers collect surplus food from Central Co-op stores at the end of each day and share it via Olio’s app with people and community groups in need.

An estimated 13,000 families in communities near to Central Co-op shops, in the Midlands and west of England have been supported through the partnership over the last year.

“Our partnership with Olio has transformed how we support our communities and the environment by reducing waste in a meaningful way,” said Central Co-op social change manager Hannah Gallimore.

“Reaching one million items is an incredible milestone, and it's heartening to see how this food, which might otherwise have gone to waste, is instead reaching thousands of families in need.

Olio chief operating officer Saasha Celestial-One added: “It’s great to see what an incredible impact our partnership with Central Co-op has had in such a short time.

“One million items rescued is no mean feat, and we’re really proud to be playing a part in Central Co-op’s waste reduction and CSR strategies.”
