Alok Sharma is leaving his role as Business Secretary in order to fully focus on the presidency of COP26. Sharma will still be a full member of Cabinet and will chair the Climate Action Implementation Committee.
He will be replaced at the BEIS by Kwasi Kwarteng, and Sharma sent congratulations to him via a Tweet saying “he will do a brilliant job! “.
Sharma was appointed President for COP 26 on 8 January 2020 and was the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy between 13 February 2020 and 8 January 2020.
Prior to entering Parliament, he was an accountant with Coopers & Lybrand Deloitte, and then worked for 16 years within banking, first with the Japanese firm Nikko Securities and then Enskilda Securities.
