Tesco partners with charity and suppliers to tackle hygiene poverty

Tesco has linked up with donated product charity In Kind Direct to run a campaign this month where hygiene poverty impacted families can receive goods from six major manufacturers.

Through the partnership the manufacturers will donate a product to families for every two bought through the supermarket, both online and in-store.

This is the fifth time the supermarket has run a similar multi-supplier campaign to support struggling families.

Unilever, Essity, Haleon, Kimberly-Clark and Edgewell are once again taking part and have this time around also been joined by P&G.

“We’re really thrilled to be able to support this incredibly important campaign again,” said Tesco category director of health, beauty and wellness.

“We recognise the importance of challenging the stigma of hygiene poverty, and we are pleased to be able to work with In Kind Direct and our suppliers to support more people in our communities to get the essential items they need.”

One in four households with children live in hygiene poverty, where they cannot afford basic products such as toothpaste and shampoo, said the charity.

It added that this equates to more than two million families “who are facing impossible decisions to eat, heat or keep clean everyday”.

Unilever personal care general manager Chris Barron added: “The latest figures from In Kind Direct show that it’s more crucial than ever that we work together to support families in the UK who are living in hygiene poverty.

"To date, we have donated well over 2 million hygiene products, and with this new phase, we expect to hit the three million mark by summer 2025.

“Our expanded partnership and comprehensive marketing campaign will ensure we continue to make a significant impact, so that we can support those who are most vulnerable by providing the hygiene products they need."
