XR to stop public disruption

Extinction Rebellion (XR) has said it has taken a “controversial” resolution to temporarily shift away from public disruption as a primary tactic.

Tactics such as XR protestors gluing themselves to Tube trains have met with significant public anger, and have led to a, temporary, change of heart as these activities seem to have alienated the public from the cause.

XR now believes it will focus on pressure on politicians and the media to draw attention to the climate. In a statement the coalition said: “This year, we prioritise attendance over arrest and relationships over roadblocks, as we stand together and become impossible to ignore.”

It also noted that, in its opinion, the conditions for change in the UK “have never been more favourable” with the multiple crises across the globe presenting an opportunity to “move beyond traditional divides”.

Other high-profile campaigners, such as Stop Oil, have, as yet, made similar promises to stop action that directly affects the public.
