Green Angel Ventures is making an investment in a revolutionary new glass coating that could cut air condition use.
Green Angel Ventures’ £1.6m investment, supported by a £500k Innovate UK grant, will enable start up Albotherm to further develop its smart coating technology within the commercial building and greenhouse sectors.
The low carbon cooling solution can reduce energy use and protect crops in greenhouses where 25 per cent of crop yields can be destroyed by excess heat and light, threatening the farming industry and global food security. Using a reversible coating for glass surfaces, the polymer chemistry can switch between opaque and transparent, providing shade in high temperatures and allowing sunlight through at lower temperatures.
Albotherm has an all-female team, led by Molly Allington (CEO) and Dr Sian Fussell (CTO) and is a spin out from research at the University of Bristol. The funding will enable Albotherm to develop its technology further, scale up manufacturing capabilities, and complete large scale commercial pilots, allowing the company to bring its first products to the greenhouse market within the next two years.
