Europe reaches 15 per cent wind energy

Europe installed 15.4GW of new wind energy in 2019, the majority of this was onshore wind, and now has 205GW of wind energy accounting for 15 per cent of all electricity consumption.

Across Europe there were €19bn of new investments announced in wind farms, covering 11.8GW of capacity. The United Kingdom led with 2.4 GW of both onshore and offshore installed last year, followed by Spain (2.3GW, all of it onshore) and Germany (2.2GW, both onshore and offshore).

WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson said: “Climate neutrality and the Green Deal require Europe to install over twice as much new wind energy each year as it managed in 2019. And the growth needs to come from both offshore and onshore wind.”
