Octopus customers in Market Weighton or Caerphilly can enjoy cheaper 100 per cent renewable electricity whenever Octopus local turbines are spinning. In a new scheme the company is offering its customers a package for £1 a week giving them local renewable energy, and 20 to 50 per cent discounts on energy if the local turbine is spinning (estimated at 98 per cent of the time).

In the two test locations, Octopus Energy turbines can supply enough renewable energy to power up to 800 homes and the company has a ‘waiting list’ for other locations. Octopus is also seeking landowners to develop wind or solar farms.

The move from Octopus follows several flexible tariffs being created by energy suppliers that can switch charges depending on the time of day or source of energy as metering technology and storage (via EVs or direct) becomes a more common consumer feature.
