Rolls-Royce could get regulatory approval for its new generation of mini-nuclear power stations as early as 2024.
The Government is stepping up the drive to energy independence following the war in the Ukraine, having asked the UK’s nuclear watchdog to start the approval process for the company’s Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Rolls-Royce hopes that following approval it will be able to make the SMRs operational and supplying the national grid by 2029.
The Government’s recently published energy strategy stated that it wished to see final investment decision on the first SMR project in the next parliament, but there is pressure to bring this deadline forward into the current parliament.
