Jet Zero: reshaping aviation by 2050

Grant Shapps has launched the Government’s new Jet Zero strategy, a plan for achieving net-zero aviation by 2050.

The strategy intends to decarbonise the sector, both in terms of the actual aviation and supporting infrastructure such as airports.

Some options may include the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). There is a commitment to build at least five commercial SAF plants under construction by 2025, and a mandate for at least 10 per cent SAF to be blended into conventional aviation fuels by the end of the decade.

The Government will fund research into SAF and invest in greenhouse gas removal technologies to drive decarbonisation and offset any residual emissions and enhance the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS).

Jet Zero builds on the Government’s Net Zero strategy, as well as the Transport Decarbonisation Plan, which outlines the commitments and actions needed to decarbonise the entire transport system.
