Most of the UK’s electricity is being generated by low carbon energy sources this winter.
Between Monday 31 October and Sunday 18 December, renewables and nuclear combined have provided 54 per cent of Britain’s electricity. Renewables generated 40 per cent and nuclear provided 14 per cent.
A mix of private investment and supportive Government policies over the last two decades, has seen the UK get a majority of its power from non-fossil fuel sources, with half of the renewable generation from wind alone. Over £175 billion of private investment is currently planned for wind and other renewables over the course of the next eight years.
RenewableUK’s CEO Dan McGrail said “Low carbon energy sources are doing the heavy lifting this winter, providing most of the power which is keeping the lights on and Britain’s homes warm at the coldest time of the year.
