Australian company to export renewable energy

The Asian Renewable Energy Hub aims to harness Western Australia’s wind and solar resources and export the renewable energy via subsea power cables to Indonesia.

Using wind and solar generating equipment manufactured in Indonesia, a combined 6GW of energy (4GW of wind and 2GW of solar) will be connected by two subsea power cables from Australia to Jakarta and Singapore, creating the opportunity to export over 15 TWh of electricity each year.

The project has been made possible by recent advances in subsea High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable transmission technology that allow the cost-efficient transmission of electricity over very long distances, and the project will be sited in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The Asian Renewable Energy Hub is being developed by a consortium of global energy companies, including InterContinental Energy, CWP Energy Asia and Vestas.

Partners in the project also include Prysmian, Swire Pacific Offshore and the Energy Change Institute.
