Climate finance must help poor and vulnerable

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) has called for the UN climate talks in Bonn to have greater focus on the effects on the global poor.

The IIED estimates that only 10 per cent of the USD17bn climate finance committed from international climate funds is prioritised for local-level activities, with little tracking of their effectiveness or impact.

Andrew Norton, director of IIED notes: “The floods, hurricanes and wildfires that have devastated millions of people’s lives from Bangladesh to the Virgin Islands must serve as a wake-up call. There is no question ― climate change is here now. Governments need to agree measures that ensure how and where these funds are invested, directed and used. Their transparency is key, so how they are used can be openly tracked, to improve their effectiveness.”
