The Government has launched a new Green Jobs Taskforce to support the creation of 2 million skilled jobs to “build back greener” and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Chaired by Energy Minister Kwasi Kwarteng and Skills Minister Gillian Keegan, the Taskforce will focus on delivering skilled workers for the UK’s transition to net-zero including green sectors such as offshore wind and home retrofitting.
The Taskforce will also help develop longer-term plans and will be supporting workers in high carbon transitioning sectors, such as oil and gas, to retrain in new green technologies and follows the £3bn green investment into renovating homes and public buildings to make them more energy efficient.
The Green Jobs Taskforce includes representatives from the Construction Industry Training Board, Engineering Construction Industry Training Board, East London Institute for Technology, Retrofit Works, Edinburgh University and National Grid.
The Build Back Greener scheme was launched last month with the Prime Minister announcing £160m will be made available to upgrade ports and infrastructure across UK communities to increase offshore wind capacity, and complements the £200m Sustainable Innovation Fund package announced in June to aid an economic recovery following the coronavirus pandemic.
