Mark Carney, the ex-Governor of the Bank of England, has joined Brookfield Asset Management as its head of ESG and impact fund investing.
The former Governor is currently the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and has been an advocate of sustainability for many years. He will now lead the firm’s ESG-focused investment strategies, developing a group of funds that will work to combine positive social and environmental outcomes with returns.
Carney commented, “With an accelerated transition to a net-zero economy imperative for climate sustainability and one of the greatest commercial opportunities of our time, I’m looking forward to building on Brookfield’s leading positions in renewable energy and sustainability to the benefit of its investors and society.”
According to Brookfield, the company has already built itself into the largest pure-play private sector renewable energy business, with 20,000MW in operations and 18,000MW in development globally.
Carney will continue in his role as a United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.
