British Gas is to donate 10 per cent of profits to its Energy Support Fund to provide grants to the most financially vulnerable customers for the duration of the energy crisis.
An immediate £12m donation will boost the fund and the grants are expected to average £750 per household supported. This help will be alongside the annual £6m investment in the British Gas Energy Trust to provide grants and money advice to all energy customers.
Chris O’Shea, chief executive of Centrica, parent company of British Gas Energy said: “The current cost of living crisis requires all of us to think differently. As a responsible business we want to do more to support our customers during this difficult time.”
So far, the support package will amount to over £25m, with £18m donated to the British Gas Energy Support Fund and the £6m to the British Gas Energy Trust; and an additional £2m investment made through the British Gas Energy Trust to fund another 20 money advice centres.
