France bans short-haul domestic flights

France is set to ban short-haul domestic flights, insisting that travellers use rail alternatives where possible in a move that is likely to be repeated across the continent.

If a rail journey tales less than two and a half hours, it will be mandatory to use rail, with the EC agreeing to the ban as long as it applies to routes that offer multiple direct connections.

The changes, part of the country’s 2021 Climate Law, will also be applied to private jets, will only affect routes between Paris Orly and Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux. Later it is fully expected to be expanded to cover more journeys and cross-border travel.
