Two London charities that support people impacted by food poverty and the cost-of-living crisis are to share £445,000 from Google.org, the tech firm’s charitable arm.
The charities that will benefit are Camden Giving and Islington Giving.
The funding is part of the tech firm’s commitment to support community projects near to its headquarters in the capital.
Google.org has handed good causes worth more than £1m over the last three years.
The two charities will use the money to strengthen their grassroots organisations and community groups.
This includes supporting food distribution and enhancing capacity at local organisations to meet spikes in demand.
Four in ten children in the two boroughs grow up in poverty, according to figures cited by Google.org.
"Camden Giving and Islington Giving have a deep understanding of the challenges faced by our local communities,” said Google head of community affairs Zoe Stern.
“They enable grassroots partners to address significant issues of deprivation and food insecurity.
“We have seen first hand the positive impact that this collaborative approach has on our neighbourhood, and this grant will build on our long-standing partnership by connecting even more local residents to crisis support, employability and skills programmes."
Islington Giving chief executive Sarah Benioff added: “Google.org has demonstrated their commitment to local communities across Islington over the last two years by supporting Islington Giving.
“By working in partnership with us they have put their trust and funding into the hands of local grassroots experts on the front line of food poverty, enabling local people to access nutritious and healthy food.”
