Around a quarter of retailers are involved in measures to improve the sustainability of their distribution and delivery operations.
A survey of more than 500 retail and eCommerce managers has found that 25% are adopting green delivery practices, while the same proportion are involved in sustainable transport options from manufacturer to distribution centres.
It also found that 24% are involved in sustainable transport solutions from distribution centres to stores and in sustainable product sourcing.
In addition, 29% are involved in sustainable order packaging, 27% involved in recycling initiatives and 22% have adopted “sustainable final mile delivery solutions” to consumers.
Options being looked at include retailers sharing vehicles and drivers to cut costs and improve efficiency. This “also reduces carbon emissions”, according to business services firm Wincanton, which carried out the survey.
“Embracing more collaborative approaches to supply chains, such as shared warehousing and transport solutions, will go a long way towards making retailers more agile and able to achieve the growth they’re targeting,” said Wincanton’s managing director of eFulfilment Carl Moore.
