UN Secretary-General António Guterres has launched the High-Level Expert Group on the Net-Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities to provide scrutiny of corporate and non-state net-zero target standards and reporting.
The aim of the group will be to provide comprehensive and coherent definitions and standards for emissions pledges from corporates, investors, states and municipal authorities. The Group seeks to ensure that all commitments are transparent, credible, and backed by robust implementation plans, which can be converted into real emissions cuts as rapidly as possible.
The Group will also undertake the definition of the measurement metrics for decarbonisation.
The Group will be chaired by Catherine McKenna, former Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change, who stated: “The recent avalanche of net-zero pledges by businesses, investors, cities and regions will be vital to keep 1.5C alive and to build towards a safe and healthy planet, but only if all pledges have transparent plans, robust near-term action, and are implemented in full.”
