The Government has launched a £1bn Great British Insulation Scheme for lower council tax banded properties with less energy-efficient homes to be upgraded.
New insulation to areas such as roofs, loft or cavity wall insulation will help around 300,000 people, and will come on top of the 2.4 million homes that have so far benefited from new energy efficiency measures under existing support schemes.
The scheme will help build on the government’s progress in improving energy efficiency in the country’s homes: in 2010, just 14 per cent of homes had an EPC rating of C or above, compared to 47 per cent in 2022.
Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, said: “Boosting the energy efficiency of homes creates the best long-term protection against fuel poverty for the most vulnerable.”
The new support will run alongside the existing Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which offers free home energy efficiency improvements, such as insulation, heat pumps and solar panels to families on low incomes.
