Hydrogen heating trials have been called off in Ellesmere Port after protests. Hopes of the UK's first hydrogen-powered community have vanished into the air after residents objected.
Cadent, the company behind the planned trial, said in a statement: “The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has informed us that ours is not the preferred proposal for the Hydrogen Village trial. We understand that this means that the Government is likely to progress the trial in Redcar rather than in Whitby in Ellesmere Port.”
The trial was seen as a test for using hydrogen gas for domestic homes, with natural gas being turned off and replaced with pure hydrogen from 2025, but local residents had expressed fears over the safety of the scheme.
