The Netherlands is planning to make it mandatory to install heat pumps systems in four years’ time, as EU countries desperately attempt to stop dependence on Russian gas.

Although owners of existing houses will not need to immediate make the switch, those replacing boilers and new builds will need heat pumps or a similar ‘green’ alternative source of energy.

The UK has plans to ban gas boilers in new homes after 2025, but so far EU countries have been slow to follow suit – the Russian invasion of the Ukraine is reordering those priorities it seems. The Dutch minister for housing and spatial planning Hugo de Jonge made the announcement in the Dutch parliament, although there ha already been a significant backlash.
