EasyJet Holidays and UN issue update on tourism industry's first ESG framework

Plans are underway to create the tourism industry’s first ESG framework, through a link up between the United Nations (UN) and easyJet Holidays.

The plans have been revealed in easyJet Holiday’s 2024 Impact Report.

This details that it is working with UN Tourism, formerly the UN World Tourism Organisation, to develop “the first tourism specific ESG Framework”.

Already research and surveys have been carried out with accommodation and reservation services businesses by the UN body and easyJet Holidays has also “conducted an investigative survey with our hotel partners”.

“By participating, our partners were able to include their perspectives in our framework, to support them in future reporting requirements,” said the holiday firm.

Executive director of UN Tourism Zoritsa Urosevic said: “At UN Tourism, we believe the future of tourism lies in creating value for businesses, communities, and the planet.

“Our partnership with easyJet holidays to advance an ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses reflects our commitment to global sustainability goals.

“Sustainability is no longer optional – it is essential. This collaboration exemplifies how strategic partnerships can accelerate the integration of ESG principles, ensuring that tourism contributes positively to environmental conservation, social equity, and economic resilience.”

In its Impact Report easyJet Holidays revealed there had been a 37% growth in its use of certified sustainable hotels.

These have been independently certified against Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria, around sustainable management, environmental protection, support for local communities and promotion of local heritage.

The holiday company’s chief executive Garry Wilson said it wants to “make more sustainable holidays mainstream”.

“As a major tour operator, we must play our part in building a better industry for local communities, visitors and the environment, by harnessing the opportunities to deliver meaningful change at the pace required,” he added.
