COP27: France and Spain to halt ICE sales

France and Spain have become latest countries to announce an end of internal combustion driven vehicle sales, in both cases by 2035.

Although both countries had planned to do so by 2040, this new announcement made at COP27 moves the clock forward a further five years, and both join the Zero Emission Vehicles Declaration (ZEVD), launched at COP26, which now has over 200 signatories (there were 130 at COP26) including national and sub-national governments, manufacturers, businesses and fleet owners.

ZEVD pledges signatories to sales of zero-emission vehicles only by 2035 in leading markets and by 2040 across the globe, and ZEVD will now be overseen by the newly formed Accelerating to Zero Coalition.

The UK plans to ban sales of petrol or diesel vehicles by 2030.
