Germany to miss climate targets

The German target of cutting greenhouse emissions by 65 per cent by 2030 and net-zero by a 2045 will probably be missed, according to the German government’s own climate advisers and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), Reuters has reported.

Germany had had plans to be a leader amongst EU nations on the climate and environment, but the need for alternative energy after a reliance on Russian gas, economic headwinds and not nuclear policy has forced the country to step back on emissions reductions.

Both the governments advisers and the UBA now say that Germany cannot achieve net-zero by 2045 with the current and planned climate policy.

Added to the issues, there has been pressure from German industry to water down climate targets, with car makers pushing to extend ICE powered vehicles and the chemical industry railing against climate measures such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
