TotalEnergies is suing Greenpeace France over claims that the company misreported its carbon footprint.
The disputed information was contained in a 2022 report by Greenpeace entitled "TotalEnergies' Carbon Footprint Doesn't Add Up" where Greenpeace contended, among other things, that TotalEnergies' Scope 1 emissions based on equity share allegedly exceeded 160 million tonnes of CO2e in 2019, whereas the Scope 1 emissions based on equity share reported by TotalEnergies for 2019 actually amounted to 55 million tons of CO2e.
TotalEnergies described the claim as “fanciful and false” and accuses Greenpeace of spreading misleading information.
Greenpeace called the action an attack and stated that it believes such action is to intimidate climate groups.
Such action does mean that the exact methods of measurement will come under scrutiny and possibly set a precent on how emissions are reported.
TotalEnergies is seeking for the claims to removed from Greenpeace’s website and a symbolic €1 in damages.
