According to BBC reports, US climate envoy John Kerry has said that the US would not pay climate reparations "under any circumstances”.
Kerry made the statement during a Congress hearing, and the stance underlines the difficult issues facing financing of developing nations during the climate crisis. Whilst many developed nations are willing to offer climate finance, this is distinct from ‘reparations’ and potentially opened ended payment for perceived ‘damage’ to the climate over an industrialisation that has removed billions form poverty.
Few nations have so far been willing to consider such payment, but more than 200 countries have agreed to create a loss and damage fund, a concept agreed at COP27 in Egypt.
