Octopus enters PV installation market

Octopus Energy is moving into the domestic solar photovoltaic installation industry, targeting 5,000 installations in 2023.

The company’s engineering arm, Octopus Energy Services, already installs electric vehicle chargers, air-source heat pumps and smart meters, but the addition of solar panels completes the renewables ecosystem.

The new service is launching across the Midlands and the South, with a view to expand it nationwide within the first year. In addition to the bespoke solar panel installation service, Octopus customers will be able to choose from a range of solar batteries, allowing them to store energy and sell it to the grid.

Octopus is planning to create nearly 200 new jobs as a result of this decision, ranging from engineers and surveyors to technical and operations support.

For some households the prospect of becoming ‘Zero Bills’ properties is possible, using installation of solar PV, a solar battery and a heat pump to reduce energy charges to nothing. Zero Bills is an Octopus certification that was trialled with an initial pilot with Ilke Homes in Essex, where 22 eligible homes are sold with the option of being Zero Bills with the aim to increase this to 10,000 homes by 2030.
