UK's largest opencast coal mine to close

The UK's largest opencast coal mine is to close. Planning permission has been withdrawn for the Ffos-y-Fran site by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council on climate grounds.

Coal Action Network and the Good Law Project have presented a campaign to close the mine, filing a Judicial Review against both the local council and Welsh and accusing the site of illegally producing, and allowing the burning of, coal.

The pressure appears to have made its mark, and the mine will not be granted any extension. The mine started extraction in 2007 on a 15-year licence, and currently produces around 1,000 tonnes of coal each day. 180 people will be made redundant
