Tokyo requires new homes to have solar

The Japanese capital Tokyo has passed laws that will require all new houses to have solar panels.

From 2025 construction firms will need to incorporate solar panels to the roofs of new residential buildings of less than 2,000 square meters. Currently only 4 per cent of Tokyo’s buildings use solar panels.

Across the globe there have been moves to utilise solar energy at a domestic level to offset the cost of living and increase energy security after the war in Ukraine, as we’ll as for reasons of reducing climate change. For example, France recently passed legislation that meant that solar panels had to be installed over parking areas. The rule came after France was the only EU member to miss its renewable energy goals.
